Redistricting proposal – Milton affected?

The state released the proposed redistricting maps for state representatives late yesterday afternoon. It’s confusing; but it appears that Ms. Dorcena Forry will no longer be representing Milton’s Precinct 3. Note that would be the new Precinct 3. Precinct 3 is now part of Representative Timilty’s district, the 7th Norfolk District.

You can find the state’s new district maps here. Here is a map that covers most of Milton. It does not include the part of town represented by Mr. Scaccia. Here is the portion of Milton covered.

And here is a snapshot of portion of Milton (Precincts 1 & 2) that fall in Ms. Forry’s district – the new 12th Suffolk.

The public can comment on the redistricting plans within the next 7 days before the committee votes. And there’s more to come. Next week the redistricting committee will announce new districts for the U.S. House of Representatives. This too may concern Milton. Massachusetts is going to lose a seat. But who and where? congressman Lynch’s district is one which may be affected, though, as the congressman has noted, until the map comes out it is all speculation.

Redistricting is a consequence of the census and is legally required if there have been shifts in population and demographics. The Boston.com Metro Desk reported:

The 2010 census showed that the ranks of minorities had surged, spurring advocates to press for new majority-minority seats. Statewide, the number of minorities rose approximately 40 percent over the decade, from about 1 million to 1.4 million. The Asian and Hispanic populations both climbed 46 percent from a decade ago, while the number of blacks rose 26 percent. The number of whites fell almost 2 percent.
