The opening of the New Acquisitions exhibit at Forbes House Museum features prints, paintings and American and export silver given to the Museum by H. A. Crosby Forbes Ph.D. and his sons, Robert P. Forbes Ph.D. and Douglas B. Forbes and their families.
The exhibit opening will take place on Thursday evening, 15 September 2011 at 6:30pm in conjunction with the FHM Annual Meeting. The exhibition and meeting are open to the public.
Among the works of art recently given to the Museum are oil paintings of the Jamaica Plain birthplace of Robert Bennet Forbes and the Haidee, the yacht owned by the Captain’s older brother, Thomas Tunno Forbes. Scenes of Macao and Canton can be viewed in a series of prints and watercolor paintings, along with a silver tea set once owned by Nathaniel Bowditch, the writer of the navigational manual.
In June, the Museum purchased a watercolor painting, Houqua’s Garden, which is also on view, along with a model ship from Canton, having been recently repaired.
The Annual Meeting at Forbes House Museum will feature an acknowledgement of Phyllis Forbes Kerr, who retired from the FHM Board of Trustees earlier this year, after serving the organization for over 17 years. During that time, Mrs. Kerr wrote two important books, Cabin Boy, A Voyage to China in the early 1800’s and Letters from China, The Canton- Boston Correspondence of Robert Bennet Forbes, 1838- 40; she created numerous exhibitions for the Museum as Chair of the Programs and Collections Committee, and worked tirelessly for the conservation of the Museum’s permanent collection.
FHM Executive Director, Robin Tagliaferri, will give a presentation on the exhibit, along with commentary on the recent acquisitions which took place in spring and summer 2011.
