Every 10 years the town revisits voting districts (our precincts) based on the census figures. Town Clerk James Mullen presented a plan to the Selectmen approved by the state based on figures to reduce the number of precincts in town from 11 to 10. The Selectmen also approved it. What does it mean?
There are 2 important notes regarding this. All town meeting members will be up for election next year. Mullen explained that the length of terms will be determined by number of votes received. Top 1/3 vote getters will receive 3 year terms, next 1/3 2 year terms and final third 1 year terms. Precinct 10 is being absorbed by Precincts 3 and 8. Milton’s population is ~27,000. Each precinct is targeted at 2700 with an allowable 5% deviation either way. Mullen reviewed the map with Selectmen. The redistricting sought to maintain certain “lines” that make for clear demarcation. These include Randolph Ave, Unquity Road, and Granite Ave.
Second, Precinct 3 will now vote at Cunningham and Precinct 2 will vote at the Senior Center. The move is in part due to relieve parking issues. It also affords the Town Clerk some flexibility in that having precincts co-located as it affords him spare counters. He now will have two spare counters. The map does not yet appear to be available online. You can find information about polling places and a street index with polling locations on the Town Clerk’s web page.
