Temple Shalom, which recently sought to redevelop their property in an effort to grapple with financial concerns and establish a home for the future, had to sell their land. But they are going to remain in Milton. The First Congregational Church will be opening their doors to the Temple and affording them a temporary home.
Temple Shalom announced today that they will be vacating their current building at 180 Blue Hill Avenue over the summer and will be temporarily relocating their religious services to the First Congregational Church at 495 Canton Avenue in Milton and their religious school to the Pierce Middle School.
“We have a lot to be grateful for”, said Lynda Packer, Temple President. “We have found physical spaces that meet our spiritual and logistical needs while providing us with the time to find a permanent home in Milton.” Ms. Packer had more good news to share. “The Board of Directors just entered into a five-year contract with Rabbi Alfred Benjamin of Milton. We believe we have the essential ingredients for a growing Jewish congregation in the town we love.”
At a recent Temple dinner, Reverend Dr. Jeffrey P. Johnson warmly welcomed the Temple Shalom membership to his church and said that his membership looks forward to being “roommates” over the coming year, wishing the congregation “mazel tov”–meaning “good luck” and “congratulations on a happy occasion” in Yiddish.
“Temple Shalom wants to thank the many institutions in Milton who have offered to help our synagogue during this transitional period”, continued Ms. Packer. “We found it very heartening to see so many individuals and organizations wanting to help ensure our future in town.”
