What’s in the Massachusetts Archives?

Now you can find out. Janis Duffy will be introducing the holdings and services of archives. This may be the nudge you need to get started on your families history.

On Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at 7:00 PM at the Keys Community Room, Milton Public Library, Janis Duffy, former reference supervisor at the Massachusetts Archives, will introduce us to the holdings of public records and available services at the Massachusetts Archives located at Columbia Point, Dorchester. These include Massachusetts vital records (birth, marriage and deaths), passenger arrival records for the port of Boston, Federal and State census records, Colonial records, Massachusetts legislation, probate records and many other items. Duffy will explain how this information can be useful in researching family history. Duffy is past president of TIARA (The Irish Ancestral Research Association) and has been pursuing her roots for almost 20 years, leading several research trips to Ireland.

Also in the Archives Building is the Commonwealth Museum which has on display the state’s copy of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights, the 1780 Massachusetts Constitution, the 1629 Charter of Massachusetts Bay and many other fascinating items of Massachusetts history.

The program will have time for discussion and a question and answer period. Light refreshments will be served. No reservations are required.
