Milton resident Roderick Ireland confessed to having “butterflies” as he prepares for a hearing by the Governor’s Council on confirmation as the first African American to be a chief justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court.

Mr. Ireland was nominated by Governor Patrick to replace Chief Justice Margaret Marshall who has chosen to step down to spend more time with her husband.
