Lecture: “Paddler, Spare that Tree!” Ecology of Trees & Our Waterways

Join the Milton Garden Club for a presentation by Russ Cohen, Rivers Advocate with the State of MA Riverways Program and learn the answers to questions shuch as:

  • What should be done about trees lying in a river? Should they be removed, pruned, relocated, or left undisturbed?
  • What are the safety considerations?
  • What is the appropriate balance between the competing desires of canoeists, kayakers, and other boaters who seek easy access; the interests of property owners concerned about flood drainage and a ‘tidy’ appearance; and the needs of fish, mammals, amphibians, insects and birds for adequate food, nesting, and cover?
  • What is “large woody debris” in rivers, and how does it improve water quality and control flooding downstream?

Russ will also share some info about native species that are suitable for planting in ripairan areas. Mr. Cohen works as the Rivers Advocate for the Division of Ecological Restoration in the MA Dept. of Fish and Game. He provides technical assistance and other help to groups in preserving riparian lands, water conservation, riverine vegetation and establishing and publicizing public access to and along rivers, consistent with resource protection. He has a bachelor’s degree in land use planning, a master’s degree in Natural Resources, and a law degree.
