The weather was superb and the setting was great as state officials came to voice to their appreciation to the Massachusetts men and women who have served in the Armed Forces.
Captain Tom Kelley, who was awarded the Medal of Honor and is our Secretary of Veterans’ Services, addressing the crowd of veteran’s and their families, “It is a day for you.” Captain Kelly was one of several officials on hand. With him on the dais were Undersecretary of Veterans’ Services, Coleman Nee, Governor Duval Patrick, Lt. Governor Tim Murray, Congressman Stephen Lynch, State Senator Brain Joyce, and National Guard Brigadier General Tom Sellars,
Congressman Lynch who has made numerous trips to Iraq and Afghanistan said he often asked troops, “What is it that brought you to this place?” . . . to put on the uniform and make the sacrifice. He said that the answer was almost always to follow the example set by a parent. Speaking to the veterans, Lynch said, “I want to thank you for your power of example.”
Brig Gen Sellars said that when veterans get together, “They like to swap stories . . . not always their own stories,” he continued smiling, ” but, that’s OK, there is more than enough credit to go around.”
