Mtg notes: Selectmen 08.05.10 – Bike path concerns; Ulin rink bids due

The Board of Selectmen had a lengthy session on 8/5 during which they heard about an hour of testimony during Citizen’s Speak from residents who voiced their concerns about the DCR’s proposed extension of the bike path / walkway from Central Avenue to Mattapan Square. Capen Street residents are particularly concerned about safety and security should the path cut across from Mattapan to Milton at the Capen Street T-stop. They are also worried about increased noise do to tree removal. There are 5 different options being explored by the DCR. The concrens largely echoed previously voiced objections. Bids are due on management of the Ulin Rink. After 8 months and 5 extensions, the town recently received a permit from the DCR to manage the rink. The Selectmen put out an RFP to have a 3rd party take responsibility for day to day management of the facility. Several organizations have expressed interest. These include Curry College, a group of local residents and skating advocates that are forming a non-profit, and a couple of private firms. One of these is likely FMC a rink management firm that manages over a dozen municipal rinks. Bids in response to the RFP are due on August 16th.

Other business included but was not limited to:

  • discussion of the proposed stretch code that will revised building codes to include regulations that improve energy efficiency in home construction. Citizens both for and against the issue spoke after the presentation.
  • discussion of MWRA water and sewer rates. The selectmen voiced concerns on how to rein in the MWRA as costs continue to escalate.
  • Selectmen voted for a 2.5% salary increase for the Fire Chief
