Texting and testing of elderly drivers moving closer to being a law

The House finally took action and voted 150-1 to ban texting while driving and require that people who turn 75 renew their licenses in person and have their eyesight checked every 5 years. Drivers under the age of 18 are banned from using cell phones except in the case of an emergency and all drivers regardless of age are banned from texting.

According to an article in today’s Boston Globe, the Department of Motor Vehicles will also be able to take into account the cognitive abilities of drivers regardless of age.

Senator Joyce of Milton has been a strong advocate of this legislation. It will now move on to the Governor’s desk. The Governor will review it and given his support of safe driving, is expected to sign it.
