Struggling to make ends meet in the toughest economic climate in years, some communities south of Boston are taking a tougher stance against tax delinquents, whether they are behind on property taxes, water and sewer bills, or fees for trash collection.
Holbrook has adopted tougher guidelines on collecting property taxes, Milton has discovered that publicizing the names of delinquent property owners helps, and Randolph is collecting water and sewer bills with renewed vigor. And in some communities like Walpole, tax collections have actually increased, officials say. (Read the full story here.)
Mini Fair: Today, Milton High will host the second Higher Education Visitation Day (or mini fair) for Juniors and Seniors. It will be held from 8:40 to 9:15. Students must have a pass signed by their B period teacher in order to attend. A list of the colleges that will be here is posted outside guidance.
SAT: Today is the last day to register for the November 7 SAT I/II. Milton High is a test center for this administration.
Celebrate Milton: If you have not already signed up for your specific time slot at Celebrate Milton, please do so in the Main Office. There will be a 5 minute meeting about the event today right after school in the auditorium.
Step Team: The Step Team will have a meeting today promptly at 2:45 in room 239.

The Milton Wildcats boys varsity continued to improve on their record with a 1-0 win over Dedham yesterday.
Outside fullback Kevin Lamere scored the game’s only goal with an assist from freshman Roy Butlin. The Milton defense remained solid and goalkeeper Greg Corcoron notched his 3rd consecutive shutout.
This is the Wildcat’s 3rd consecutive win. They are unbeaten in their last 4 games. Their record is now 3-5-1 at the season’s halfway point.
Unfortunately, other Milton squads did not fare so well against Dedham. The girls varsity soccer team lost 6-1 (read Daily News Transcript coverage of that game here)and the girl varsity field hockey team fell 4-2.
While in Framingham the golf team lost 42-66.

It is tough to attend many of these games as they are played in the afternoon; but this week there are two that will be at home under the lights at Brook Field. The girls varsity field hockey team will be taking on Wellesley tonight (Weds 9/30) at 7:00 and on Friday the girls varsity soccer team hosts Fontbonne Academy, also at 7:00pm. Get out there and show them some love, they deserve your support.

A hearing on Beacon Hill today was aimed at increasing penalties for people found using marijuana in Massachusetts. Some police claim pot smokers are getting a free ride because of deficiencies in the state’s new law decriminalizing possession of small amounts of marijuana. 7’s Jonathan Hall uncovers, what some are calling, a flaw in the law.
It’s no longer a crime to smoke pot in the Bay State. Voters sent the old law up in smoke and now the punishment is a fine. The problem: most people just aren’t paying and they’re getting away with it.

The Milton Pop Warner A-2, C-2, and I-2 pop warner football teams all fell to their Mansfield opponents.
The A-2 was shut out 28-0. The C-2 fared better and came close losing 13-12. The I-2 team lost 14-6. You can read more on the games from the Sun Chronicle article here.
