Special Town Meeting passes all 3 articles

All three articles before the Special Town Meeting on 10/19 passed. They were:

  1. To see if the Town will vote to decrease budget appropriations voted by the 2009 Milton Annual Town Meeting as described in warrant. It was an amount of $331,000. $110,591 came from the schools and $175,502 came from the police department. The amount to police department is result of state cut to officers who are awarded stipends for advanced educational achievement.
  2. To see if the Town will vote to increase the meals tax an additional .75% as allowed by state law. The Warrant Committee recommended this and estimated revenues to be ~$70,000 and thought that was a conservative estimate. They also acknowledged that the numbers available from the state were a bit of guesswork.
  3. To see what sum of money the Town will appropriate for payment of legally obligated medical expenses for public safety personnel resulting from injuries sustained in the line of duty. The Warrant Committee recommended that $450,000 be appropriated.

Rush to get in on homebuyer tax credit

from NECN

Is the housing crisis over? Looking at the bidding wars and rush to get a federal tax credit, it sure seems so in Massachusetts.

Milton 35, Dedham 14: One quarter of the way there

from Wicked Local Dedham

Huddled together against a late fall cold snap, the Dedham faithful were warmed by the efforts of their Marauders during the opening ten minutes of Friday night’s game at Milton’s Brooks Field.

Scoring on the opening kickoff and then again, on an 8-yard run near the end of the first quarter, the Marauders jumped out to a 14-0 lead and looked like they were on the cusp of their first win of the year. (Read the full story here.)

Amateur historian binds slices of local lore into books

There is a nice profile in today’s Globe of Milton resident Anthony Sammarco. Mr. Sammarco has a new book out on the Baker Chocolate Factory. A cemetery trustee, he frequently give lectures and talks here in Milton and throughout the south shore.

from The Boston Globe

Anthony Sammarco is a big guy with a soft voice and a vast knowledge of Boston neighborhoods.

A dapper dresser, he speaks with a sophistication that betrays little of his Codman Square roots or his day job as treasurer of a trucking company.

History surrounds and fulfills him. (Read the full story here.)
