“Every boat has a story,” says Bill “Beck” Becklean, the coxswain of the 1956 gold-medal U.S. Olympic team. Mr. Becklean, still trim and full of Olympic energy, spoke in his coxswain’s voice without benefit of a microphone to a full house in the Last Chapter event of this season’s Milton Reads.

Becklean is still in the game, coaching the impressive boys novice team from Cambridge Rindge and Latin.  With his gold medal in hand, he shared his own stories of struggle and glory, rules for living well, and the motivation to succeed.

A frank look at the special permit process – Thayer Is the New Hendries

Commentary by Frank Schroth

Netflix has “Orange Is the New Black.” Milton has “Thayer Is the New Hendries.” With the Planning Board, the hits just keep coming.

Like Hendries, this application, which is for a special permit to re-introduce a landscaping line of business to Thayer Nursery, is becoming a serial program of epic length. Also like Hendries, the narrative is a bit hard to follow. Each session looks and sounds like the previous one.

Annie LaVigne sent in this poem by Turkish poet Melih Cevdet Anday. If you have a favorite poem (or two) send it along to frank@mytownmatters.com.

On the way back from the funeral cocks were crowing
Upon the April soil of an empty afternoon.
