Perhaps the Milton Police officer who wheeled his patrol car through the Turners Pond parking lot said it best, “That’s awesome!”
A team of folks had just set down a large geodesic dome constructed from recycled water bottles on the lawn at Turners. The structure was built from approximately 1500 water bottles, which Sustainable Milton noted is the number of water bottles consumed in the United States every second.
The dome at Turners Pond was a collaborative effort between Sustainable Milton and Artspace Milton to celebrate earth day and raise awareness of the environmental issue created by disposable plastic. Despite recycling efforts approximately 80% of water bottle wind up in land fills. The dome was the centerpiece of an event that included a Recycle Art Challenge! Over 100 people can by to participate and following are some of the creative outcomes.
The dome was inspired by Milton native Buckminister Fuller. Mr. Fuller was an architect, author, designer, and futurist. He is the inventor of the geodesic dome. He fathered the term “spaceship earth” and was an advocate of sustainable design.
They also wanted to shine a light on the asset that is Turners Pond , a natural jewel for which we are all stewards. The “construction crew” included Imge Ceranoglu and Michael Blutt of Sustainable Milton, Ian & Janet MacNeil, Scott Hainline, Mia Gilmore, and the Artspace crew of Janet Gilmore, Karen Hainline, Frank Schroth, Cheryl Tougias, and Michael Chinman. Sustainable Milton and Artspace Milton want to thank the Milton Department of Parks & Recreation, the MiltonPolice Department, Milton Hill Sport & Spa, Fitness Unlimited, Hill Holliday, and the Glover Elementary School.
Here are an evening and daytime views of the dome.
