Fontbonne Academy’s Social Justice Fair

Fontbonne Academy hosted its 6th annual Social Justice Fair on Thursday, March 28. The fair showcased capstone projects of the senior class, which are the culmination of Fontbonne’s Theology curriculum. Students from the Class of 2013 presented their projects to the entire school as well as many parents and guests.

Throughout the academy, in classrooms, the library, foyer and cafeteria, the senior class demonstrated their capstone projects. Each Fontbonne senior is required to research, advocate for, and report on a social injustice and the Social Justice Fair brings their year-long projects together. The fair is open to the public, and many family and community members wandered the exhibits and presentations today.

Moving presentations on hunger in America, breast cancer awareness, teen depression and eating disorders, among others, filled the morning. The presentations reflected students’ enthusiasm for their subjects, many chosen as a result of how an injustice has personally touched their lives. The underclasswomen and visitors listened and learned about the broad range of topics and injustices and the corrective actions required to eradicate the injustices. Projects flanked every open area, and the school was abuzz with passionate advocacy and reflection.

“This is one of the most exciting and meaningful days of the year,” stated Head of School, Mary Ellen Barnes. “We ignite the fire of social justice in our students and they carry it well beyond Fontbonne, out into the world. Many students pursue this passion well beyond their days at Fontbonne Academy.”
