Town Clerk, James Mullen, resigns

Longtime Town Clerk and Milton institution James Mullen announced his resignation today. Mullen has served the town for decades in a variety of capacities including School Committee member, Town Meeting Member and Selectmen. But  it is as Town Clerk that he is best known. Today will be his last day.

“It is the end of an era,” according to past Town Treasurer, Kevin Sorgi, who also said,  “I cannot remember when Jimmy wasn’t Town Clerk.”

Mullen made the surprise announcement to town hall employees today. An interim Town Clerk will be appointed to oversee the primary and upcoming town elections. The position will be open in the upcoming election.

In a letter to the Board of Selectmen Mr. Mullen noted that March 4th would be the anniversary of 40 years of service. That date will be the effective date that he leaves office. However, his last day in his office at town hall is today.

As Town Clerk, Mr. Mullen has overseen countless elections and maintained vital records. Most recently he managed the redistricting of the town, reducing the number of prectincts from 11 to 10.

 

 

A call has been made to Mr. Mullen’s office seeking comment.
