Thursday night the Board of Selectmen voted to award Curry College the opportunity to manage the Ulin Rink. An agreement needs to be drafted and signed before they will officially assume day to day responsibility for the rink. Selectmen hope to see open September 15th.
There were two parties vying for management of the rink, Curry College and The Ulin Rink Management Corporation, a local non-profit group headed by Tim Kernan. Town Administrator Kevin Mearn has notified the parties of the decision and will be working with Town Counsel to draft an agreement with Curry College.
Mr. Mearn noted that the decsion came “after two nights of executive session in which [the board] deliberated and reviewed each proposal. It was a very tough decision. In the end it was certain financial considerations which may have tipped [the scales] in favor of Curry.”
The town was awarded a 5 year permit by the DCR to manage the rink with the understanding that the town, lacking the resources, would seek an outside organization to actually run the rink on a day to day basis. That organization will be Curry assuming an agreement is reached and signed. Going forward the town will look to pressure local legislators to come to agreement and get a bill passed that will award the town a long term lease which will provide more flexibility and control.
