Last August at a meeting of the Board of Selectmen, Chair Keohane announced that “the Connellys are on board” with an effort to revive a mixed use development at the Hendries site. They would be holding two neighborhood meetings in September at which their attorney and Cheryl Tougias, a local architect, would present the revised plan. Those meetings did not happen. That is not all that hasn’t happened.

The devil in the Hendries details

The summary provided by the Chair of the Board of Selectmen Denis Keohane regarding the Hendries property was welcome news to the neighborhood and town. A signature property that is a gateway to the town and could serve as the anchor in a small commercial pocket that is beginning to thrive thanks to the efforts of the merchants there may actually develop into something to be hoped for and desired: a mixed used development that delivers attractive public amenities (businesses and open space) on a scale that is compatible with the surroundings and financially rewarding to the developer. But as Senator Joyce, who resusitated this, knows, the devil is in the details.

Big issues this week: French Immersion, Hendries, & Town Administrator
There are a number of important issues that will be deliberated this week at various board and committee meetings. On Wednesday the School Committee will receive a presentation of metrics related to the French Immersion and English programs. In recent years French Immersion has seen an increase in popularity with over 60% of families opting to enter their 1st graders in French Immersion.

The Planning Board will have a full plate when they meet tomorrow evening. Two key hearings are on the agenda: one for expansion of the Milton Hill House and the other will resume discussion of the Hendries building.
