Milton moments – 2009

We are all familiar with Tip O’Neill’s famous adage, “All politics is local.” There is a reason for that: he understood that life is local. Sure there is a lot that happend nationally and internationally that is of note. For starters, a black man is President of United States. Top that.

Those exceptions aside, it is the local events that touch us directly. Here are a few of notable Milton moments from the year gone by:

The Revelus family suffered an unspeakable tragedy. Two policemen in particular were tremendously brave and a community: neighbors, school administrators, and towns people rose in support to do what they could to help this family cope.

A new library opened and it is wonderful. Technically it is a renovation but in spirit it’s brand new. And already one can sense the renewed beehive of community activity that it has engendered. Like the high school up the street, it is in constant use. A lot of people put in enormous time and effort to make this happen. We are grateful. To them we would say, “Look what you’ve done!!” Learn more about your public library here.

The MHS Wildcats locked up a Championship in Division II basketball providing the town with a thrilling ride and an incredible amount of joy and pride.

Not only can you now have a sit down dinner right here in Milton with wine and cocktails; but you have to make a choice! There are now two restaurants; Abby Park and 88 Wharf. Both are participating in the first Dorchester – Milton Restaurant week. Learn more about that here.

In another demonstration of community support, neighbors, friends and work colleagues banded together to help a beloved coach get back on his feet. Mike Madden, Milton’s varsity soccer coach, suffered from complications of back surgery that left him partially paralyzed. The “Friends of Mike Madden” and they are legion, helped with chores, tasks, and projects large and small. It was with no small amount of joy that we bumped into Mike Madden. “Well, look at you!” Coach was standing on his own two feet, doing what he loves to do, watching a bunch of U-somethings run around a soccer field. The Milton Times had a nice piece recently on Coach Madden which you can find here.

These are simply a few highlights. Much more occurred.

Leslie Cheverie & Family Donate $10,000 to Milton Public Schools

A number of items and issues came up at the recent School Committee meeting of 3/18. They met with the Championship Mens Basketball Team and their coaches, they discussed their initial thoughts on the news that the  Warrant Committee’s contingent override budget is not sufficient to keeping all schools open; and they also met with Leslie Cheverie.

Leslie Cheverie has two special needs children in the Milton Public Schools. She believes they have done well because she has given them the tools to do well. She believes other special needs children can also do well given the proper tools.

To that end, the Cheverie family is donating $10,000 to the Special Education Department of the Milton Public Schools. Mr. Rubin, head of the department, was on hand to thank her and discuss how the money would be used. Principally it will go to equipment for the “motor room.” Namely, equipment that can be used in the course of occupational and physical therapy to improve strength and coordination etc. It is an exceptionally generous gesture during a very financially difficult time and the School Committee expressed their deep gratitude.

UNBELIEVABLE!! MILTON TOPS WOBURN 70-69 IN HEARTSTOPPER!

WHAT AN AMAZING GAME! WILDCATS PUNCH TICKET TO STATE FINALS!

Both teams sputtered a little at first; but Milton led at the end of the first period 14-9 and it looked like the game would play out like the last three games Milton played. But then the second period started and by the time it ended Woburn was up by 5,  33-28.

Milton just could not catch a break. The ball would not fall. And Woburn was good. On offensive rebounds, they were killer and #21, Hanell Valez,  was a one man wrecking ball. He could not miss . . .free throws, 3 pointers, you name it, he hit it. He was skilled, poised and on fire. Woburn’s height advantage was also proving to be a challenge.

But despite being slightly off their game; the Wildcats stayed within range. Down by 9 points they clawed back into it. With about 2 mins left and down but not out, Milton’s #50 Emanuel Hutcherson, waving his arms, brought the crowd to its feet and in that moment embodied the entire team’s heart, grit and determination. There was just no quit in this team.

Then we came to the end. Woburn, up 69 – 68, McDermott fed the ball to Rene Castro who sank a jumper with 8 seconds left.  70-69, Milton over Woburn in MIAA Div 2 semifinal.

There is going to be a championship game in Worcester against Hoosac on March 14th @ 4:00 PM. But this game, this game against Woburn was something special.

Coach LoPresti acknowledged and thanked the Milton fans, especially the maniacal Copeland Crazies.  We thank him and the team for such a thrilling run. And it isn’t over yet.

GO WILDCATS!
