from The Milton Foundation for Education
Seven exceptional teachers in the Milton public schools had a very nice surprise on Friday, April 30. Trustees of the Milton Foundation for Education visited these teachers in their classrooms and informed them that they had been selected to receive a 2010 Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award. Superintendent Mary Gormley, school administrators, and scores of excited students crowded the classrooms to clap and cheer and enjoy the early morning cake and ice cream party that the MFE provided each of the winning teachers.
The festivities started at 8 a.m. at Pierce Middle School, where Noah Lai was presented with the first award of the day. Annellen Lydon, the chair of the Foundation’s Outstanding Teacher Award committee, presented flowers and balloons to all the honorees and read excerpts from the Teacher of the Year nominations submitted by parents and students. Lydon was pleased to be a part of the moving tribute to the teachers. “The Milton Foundation for Education does a lot of wonderful things in the Milton public schools, but I think honoring our best and brightest teachers is clearly right at the top of the list,” said Lydon. “We are extraordinarily fortunate to have such talented, committed and enthusiastic teachers who challenge and inspire our children each and every day. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to recognize these teachers and show them our deep appreciation for all that they do.”
Other teachers honored with this prestigious Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award were Fatmina Bourass-Elzein (Collicot), Gary Good (Milton High School), Thuy Nguyen (Tucker), Janis Powell (Cunningham), and Deborah Sinrich (Glover).
Christine Charbonneau, an eighth grade English teacher at Pierce Middle School, was presented with the Mary Grassa O’Neill Award which is given each year in honor of Milton’s former superintendent. To be considered for this award, the recipient must be known as a “teachers’ teacher,” committed to helping other teachers succeed. The Milton Foundation for Education reviewed all the 2010 Outstanding Teacher nominations and selected Charbonneau to receive this distinguished award.
This is the tenth year that MFE has presented the Outstanding Teacher of the Year Awards. This year’s winners will be honored at a special reception and ceremony on Wednesday, May 19, at 6 p.m. at Milton High School. The public is welcome at this event.
