“Les Miserables” Sells Out Local Theatre: we know why!

by Annie Davis

Currently playing at Riverside Theatre Works in Hyde Park is a spectacular production of “Les Miserables” the sung-through musical based on Victor Hugo’s novel by the same name. The musical “Les Miserables” is one of the longest-running and most beloved theatrical events, and the current production upholds that popularity.  Strong in all areas—acting, vocal performance, costumes, staging, and musicianship—a full house responded with much-deserved standing ovations on opening night, Friday, May 8th.

“Les Miserables,” is a story of love and redemption set in the backdrop of early 19th-century France. The familiar favorites, “I Dreamed a Dream,” “Castle on a Cloud,” “One Day More, ” “Who am I” all captured the audience, and at intermission, several people were in tears, so strong was the emotional response.

The talented lead actors and the ensemble are well balanced, and some notable Milton actors are in the cast. A shout-out goes to Music Director Marilyn Whipple.  A prodigious talent, Whipple has directed previous musicals at RTW and also with the Milton Players, and her work in this production is impressive.  As the keyboardist in the small orchestra, she carries the musical accompaniment, playing non-stop (except for intermission) for three hours, and then she will go back the next night to do it again!
