Pierce Middle School Students Explore Ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt

The Pierce Middle School library was transformed into a mini-museum last month, as part of an MPACE-sponsored program to help students visualize the ancient world.

?All Pierce sixth-graders were allowed the opportunity to view the display, which was a collection of more than 75 reproductions of ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman artifacts. The “museum” contained examples of statuary, pottery, glassware, coins, household items, as well as photographs of frescoes and mosaics.

?The entire project is offered through “Historia Antiqua,” an educational program which specializes in interdisciplinary presentations for students, encompassing the subjects of history, art, and Latin, as well as science, mathematics, industrial arts, and home economics.

?Models of Roman siege and a full-size suit of Roman armor with weapons were also on display to illustrate the life of Roman citizens.

?The history, culture, art, and architecture of antiquity are explained via the use of quality reproductions, role-playing, lectures, and multimedia presentations.

?“It is important for our students to understand the achievements of the ancient world,” said Dr. Karen Spaulding, principal of Pierce Middle School. “Experiencing something like Historia Antiqua allows them to realize how much we still have in common with these ancient societies. We are very grateful to M-PACE for allowing our students this opportunity.”?

M-PACE covered the cost of bringing this museum experience to Milton students. M-PACE is a group that collects donations through excise tax billing. These funds are used to support arts- and cultural-based field trips and programs for Milton Public School students.
