Brief bits: Hendries demo extended; Plate seeks liquor license; overdose victim saved; Phil Driscoll moving to DPW

by Frank Schroth

Last night the Board of Selectmen extended the demolition date for the Hendries building to February 24th. It is unlikely that date will be met but the board has opted to go with more frequent extensions as a means of keeping the issue top of mind. Member Keohane said he did not think the building would come down before April or May. Key to getting the building down is a demo permit from the Conservation Commission which neither the town nor Carrick Realty have yet obtained.

Carrick and the town have both requested extensions from the Conservation Commission. The Commission meets next Tuesday and is scheduled to take up the issue then. The discussion also noted the following:

  • Building Inspector Joseph Prondak is periodically checking on the building to ensure there is no risk due to deterioration of the outside of the building. It was expected that the recent weather may have caused additional internal damage but no increased safety risk. Ms. Conlon said Prondak was working hard behind the scenes.
  • There is no signed contract with the demolition firm according to Town Administrator Annmarie Fagan. There are still some “open issues” but what they were not specified.
  • Three transformers have been removed from the property

This is the fourth extension. The contract with Carrick initially called for the two parties to take the building down by September 30th 2014. The MyTownMatters countdown clock has been reset accordingly.

Yesterday town meeting members received an email with a draft of the town warrant for their review. Among the non-budget articles is an article for another liquor license in East Milton. This one would be for the Plate’s cafe being developed at the Fruit Center Marketplace. In a related matter (though not a warrant issue) the Fruit Center is looking to expand their parking. The extension would replace a small wooded lot that abuts the existing lot.

The Milton Fire Department posted the following on their Facebook page yesterday:

Great job today by Lt John Earner, Firefighter Nancy Monroe and Firefighter Tim Allen. They got a call today for a patient in respiratory distress. They realized that they had an overdose and administered nasal narcan. Within moments the patient began breathing again. Patient was then transported to Milton Hospital by Fallon ambulance.

Lastly, Phil Driscoll, long time administrator at the Council on Aging, is moving over to the Department of Public Works to be their Administrative Clerk.
