During the month of February, the Milton Public Library will offer some great programs suitable for adults and families.
Our continuing adult programs include Knitting with Nina happening on Thursday, 2/5/15 at 7 PM and Saturday, 2/21/15 at 10 AM in the Conference Room. Also Library Director Will Adamczyk will hold his First Friday Book Chat with Will on Friday, 2/6/14 at 11 AM. Come learn about interesting new books and share your own reading experiences.
Then please join us on Saturday, February 7th at 2 PM in the Keys Community Room for a wonderful concert with a group of 5 female singers called “Sweet Harmony.” This talented ensemble will sing a tribute to the golden age of Broadway, Hollywood and pop music. They harmonize beautifully to backup tracks and are also great dancers! They are presented by the Riverside Theatre of Hyde Park. This program is free and open to the public, appropriate for all ages, and light refreshments will be served.
There are a couple of great free film screenings at the library in February that you don’t want to miss. On Thursday, 2/12/15 at 6:30 PM, we will show “Fruitvale Station” in honor of Black History Month. This movie is a 2013 drama which is based on the events leading to the death of 22-year-old Oscar Grant of Hayward, CA. Mr. Grant was fatally and tragically shot by BART police in the early hours of New Years Day 2009 in a shocking sequence of events. It won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award for U.S. Dramatic Film at the Sundance Film Festival and was produced by Forest Whitaker, among others. Then on 2/23/15 at 6:30 PM, the movie “Film Versaille ’73: American Runway Revolution” will be shown as part of our Monday Night at the Movies Series. In an era known for protests and sit-ins, the 1973 Grand Divertissement at Versailles made a statement of its own: a fashion statement. This event pitted 5 famous French designers against 5 of the best American designers, which created a cross-stitch of change against fashion, race, business and catwalks. When 9 African-American models boarded the plane to Paris, little did they know they would help change the course of fashion and pull off its biggest coup. This is a fascinating look at a unique event.
Come and find out if your favorite movie might win an Oscar on Thursday, 2/19/15 at 7 PM in the Keys Community Room for our annual “Handicapping the Oscars” program. Film critics Ty Burr and Janice Page of The Boston Globe will provide lively banter and predictions for this very popular program. Ty’s book called Gods Like Us: On Movie Stardom and Modern Fame will be available for sale and autographs. The envelope, please!
And last but not least, we are sponsoring a “Story Slam with Andrea Lovett” on Wednesday, 2/25/15 from 6:30-8:30 PM in the Keys Community Room. The theme is “Believe It or Not” and the event is free. Sign up that night to tell a story, or sit back and listen to others tell theirs, kind of like the Moth Radio Hour. There will also be trivia and refreshments, and the guest judges will be Bob Halloran of SportsCenter 5, Vanessa Foster, and Milton H.S. teacher Stephen Collyer.
The Friends of the Milton Public Library proudly sponsor all programs held at library, which is located at 476 Canton Avenue, Milton. To learn more about the events described above, visit www.miltonlibrary.org or contact Jean Hlady, Adult Services Librarian, Reference Department at (617) 698-5757.
