Quincy Choral Society presents “O Star”

Milton Residents to Sing Sunday, December 7, 2014

The Quincy Choral Society will begin its 34th season with a concert of holiday music on December 7, 2014. The major work of the evening is Karl Jenkins’ Stella Natalis, which is written for chorus, orchestra, soprano, and trumpet. The soloists will be Chelsea Beatty, soprano, and Stephen Banzaert, trumpet. Other program highlights and seasonal favorites to be performed by the chorus and orchestra include Felix Mendelssohn’s A Star Shall Rise Out of Jacob, John Rutter’s Star Carol, and Jay Althouse’s Star of Glory. The concert will be held at Sacred Heart Church, 386 Hancock Street, North Quincy, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $18.00 and will be available at the door.

Milton residents singing on December 7 include George Corbett, Dwight Dewsnap, Cyndi Fedewa, Adelaide Haynes, Roger Haynes, Ted Hays, Brian Kelley, Laurie Macintosh, Martha McMahon, Emma Jean Moulton, Paula Murphy, Sandra Peterson, Kristie Randall, Francine Ravelson, Barbara Stoller, Sarah Wehle, Marilyn Whipple, and Mark Whipple.

Based in Boston, Chelsea Beatty is an active performer, teacher, and arts administrator. Since completing her Master’s degree in Vocal Performance at the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2013, Ms. Beatty has enjoyed engagements with Odyssey Opera, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, OperaHub, Juventas New Music Ensemble, Capella Clausura, Opera on Tap Boston, and Boston New Music Initiative. She is a winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in the Colorado/Wyoming District and a finalist in the Denver Lyric Opera Guild Competition for Colorado Singers. Her opera roles include Mimì in La Bohème, Anne Trulove in The Rake’s Progress, and the title role in Suor Angelica.

Since receiving his Master’s degree from the New England Conservatory, Stephen Banzaert has served as principal trumpet of the New Bedford Symphony and performed regularly with Boston Musica Viva, Emmanuel Music, and the Portland, Albany, and Vermont Symphonies.  A two-time trumpet fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center and winner of the Roger Voisin Trumpet Prize, Mr. Banzaert has performed under conductors Seiji Ozawa, Andre Previn, and James Conlon and presented recitals as a member of the Tanglewood Music Center Brass Quintet.  As a soloist, Mr. Banzaert has performed with the Concord Chorale, Rome Symphony, and Georgia Philharmonic.

The Quincy Choral Society, which rehearses in Milton, was founded in 1981 for the purpose of bringing musical excellence to the South Shore and the world. Members sing with music in their hearts, performing diverse, professional quality programs designed to entertain, enlighten, and enrich the human spirit. The chorus regularly performs locally, has performed in music festivals in Washington, D.C., and in Europe, and has been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in June 2015 as part of the Masterworks Series. Maestro John Nichols was named music director of the Quincy Choral Society in 1988. Mr. Nichols has been involved with the musical life of Greater Boston for more than 35 years as a conductor, composer, arranger, performer, adjudicator, and educator. Virginia “Gingy” Grimes has been the accompanist for the Quincy Choral Society since 1993. Ms. Grimes received her piano accompaniment degree from Duke University and accompanies various ensembles and soloists throughout the Boston area.
