It has come to our attention that several residents have had questions about leash laws in Milton. We also want to update you about the entire Blue Hills Reservation/DCR property.
DCR regulations require that all dogs be leashed. This is legally posted at many locations thought the Reservation. DCR Rangers will enforce this ordinance. There regulations are more restrictive than the town bylaw.
In Milton, Section 22, Paragraph B defines the “immediate restraint and control by means of a “leash or by effective command.” This means that if your dog is unleashed, you must have “immediate” control by command. This is a difficult practice for most owners.
We understand that many residents like to have their dogs unleashed, but it is not the safest practice. Each year we deal with many dogs that are struck by vehicles as well as innocent citizens who are victims of dog bites. 99% of these incidents happen by dogs that are “off leash.” Our ACO is very fair in enforcing this bylaw. We know some may not like it, but the protection for all residents is our priority. Dog ownership is a big responsibility.
