Assistant Superintendent John Phelan is leaving the Milton Public Schools to lead the Belmont School system. We met Mr. Phelan when he was the Assistant Principal at Pierce. He learned at the knee of George Moran that schools need to be safe and warm environments if learning is to happen. Phelan carried that forward as principal of Pierce and eventually as Assistant Superintendent.
John Phelan has worked hard for both the schools and the community. We are happy for him at the same time we are sorry to see him go. Fortunately, he is remaining in town. Congratulations Mr. Phelan — Mr. Phelan, who addressing 6th Graders at the start of the year would say, “Be nice . . . be good.”
I sat down with John Phelan recently to discuss his tenure with the schools. That interview is being broadcast on Milton Access TV this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 7:30 and again Monday at 6:30.
Following are the remarks Mr. Phelan made to the graduating class of 2014.
We will miss you. You have been a stable and calm force and advocate for the education and safety of all the children of Milton. THANKS so much for your contributions and best of luck in your new endeavor.
The No Place for Hate Committee had the pleasure of working with John on the Sixth Grade Homeroom No Place for Hate Workshops project when he was Middle School principal. He was just a terrific ally and partner. Wonderful guy and Belmont is going to be glad they hired him.
