St. Mary of the Hills School, a private, coeducational Catholic elementary school, announced Mary Carberry as its new principal beginning July 1.
A Milton resident for more than 30 years, Carberry began her teaching career at St. Mary’s in 1984 and is delighted to return to the school in a leadership role.
“It’s like going home,” said Carberry. “I always knew my career path would take me back to a Catholic educational setting. It’s where I feel I belong.”
Currently serving as the interim assistant principal of the John F. Kennedy Elementary School in Randolph, Carberry brings extensive educational and administrative experience to her new role. Over the course of her 33-year career, she has taught AP science and middle school language arts in districts such as Boston, Newton, Westwood and Weymouth. She also served as the founding principal of Elizabeth Seton Academy, a girls’ Catholic college preparatory school in Dorchester, and is a professor in the Master of Education program at Curry College, where she mentors and supervises aspiring teachers in the field. Carberry’s experience has prepared her well for taking the helm at St. Mary’s.
“I have the skills to work with teachers at all stages of their careers,” said Carberry. “From helping new teachers build a set of tools and strategies for the classroom, to keeping momentum going for more experienced educators, I focus on supporting teachers as a foundation for student success. I’m looking forward to working with the outstanding faculty and students at St. Mary’s.”
The Rev. Arthur Wright, pastor of St. Mary of the Hills Parish, said Carberry was a natural choice.
“Mary was the unanimous choice of the search committee because of her wealth of experience, both in teaching and administration, as well as her commitment to the Church and the community of Milton,” he said. “We are blessed to have her.”
