Why you should run or walk for Red Nation

by Frank Schroth

This Sunday the Run for Red Nation will take place at Cunningham Elementary School at 9:00am.This fun 5K fun run & walk is being organized by MHS senior Brendan Hunt and I can think of about 64 reasons why you should there. Those would be the ~44 afterschool clubs and activities and the ~20 sports teams that provide hundreds of MHS students with the athletic, recreational, social, creative, and critical opportunities they need to have a complete and well rounded education.

The town’s financial situation and that of our schools is what it is – and what it is requires supplemental funding if the high school students are to enjoy a quality high school experience. Athletic fees and a portion of the school budget are not quite enough. Mr. Hunt’s effort in organizing this important (and what promises to be highly enjoyable) event will provide (with your help) the little bit extra needed to keep these afterschool and team sports healthy.

Why do these matter? Here are a few student comments:

Having been a part of the debate team for a few years, I defintely enjoy the new ways in which it’s forced me to think and the intellectual challenge which it offers. It’s a great opportunity to improve your public speaking and learn about things which normally aren’t covered in school. I wouldn’t be the same person if I’d never joined the debate team.
– Jack Caljouw, MHS Debate Team
I’m involved in a few sports and clubs at MHS. The debate team requires alot of work but the debate tournaments are very fun. Everyone on the team has a good time bonding in between rounds. I am also on the lacrosse team. At practice we always do a series of fun drills that work on our stick skills and teamwork. Being on the team is very special to me because it allows you to become a lot closer with your teammates and exercise at the same time.

The sports and clubs I have been apart of have helped me to conquer fears, and have taught me the true meaning of a Team. Together we have grown and succeeded as a group. The sports and clubs have become us in a unique way.

I hope you will join me on Sunday at 9:00 for a fun morning supporting a great cause. You can learn more about the Run for Red Nation here.

I look forward to participating in the Run for Red Nation. How wonderful that this is a student’s senior project which gives back to our community. Whether you walk or run, this is a great way to support Mllton schools and the sports and activities that set us apart from other school districts. Thank you Brendan, see you Sunday!
