Background on the Milton Rotary Youth Exchange

Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) is a Rotary International student exchange program for secondary school students which began in Europe in 1929 with the first exchange between Rotary Clubs of Copenhagen, and Denmark and have spread world-wide.

Currently, about 9,000 students are sponsored by Rotary clubs every year. Typically, students are sent to another country for a year-long stay, generally living with multiple host families during the year and being expected to perform daily tasks within the household as well as attend school in the host country. Short term exchange programs are also quite common. These typically involve direct student exchanges between two families arranged through Rotary to coincide with major school holiday periods.

Rotary’s student exchange offers two programs to choose from, a long-term program which is a 10 or 11 month program and a short-term program which is a 3 to 6 week program.

The Milton Rotary Club falls under District 7950 of Rotary International and the RYE program of the District includes clubs in all of New England, most of New York State, and parts of Ontario and Quebec.

In the spirit of Rotary’s motto, “Service before Self,” Milton Rotary is pleased to sponsor in 2014, 4 local high school students as Junior Ambassadors abroad. 1 to Thailand for a year, and 3 other students for a short-term summer family to family exchanges. Last year the Club sponsored 3 local Milton students, 1 to Japan for a year, and 2 short-terms to Belgium, and France, and has been energetically involved with offering international student exchanges to the Milton community for more then 13 years.

Additionally, as part of this program, local families will volunteer their homes and host a long term student from abroad who will attend Milton High School for a full academic year.

The Eastern States Student Exchange Program (ESSEX) which was founded in 1966 to facilitate a smoother functioning program, works with districts in 16 states in the eastern United States, Bermuda and Quebec, Canada, and organizes both academic year long-terms and summer short-terms RYE for 36 Rotary International Districts as well as exchanges in over 30 countries worldwide.

Presently, with the help of ESSEX, the District is hosting 4, academic year long students from abroad representing Brazil, France, Germany and Turkey.
