A Midwife’s Tale will be the second film in this season’s Winter Movie Series of Cong. Beth Shalom of the Blue Hills, co-sponsored by Milton’s First Congregational Church. The film, part of the series theme: “Strong and Funny Women,” will be screened on Saturday evening, January 25th at 7:00 p.m. (doors open at 6:45) in Huntington Hall of the First Congregational Church, 495 Canton Avenue, Milton, with entry at the rear door. The film series is open to the public.
“A Midwife’s Tale” is a docudrama that tells the story of two remarkable women: an 18th century midwife and healer who kept an unusual and thorough journal of her experiences, and the 20th century historian who brought her words to life. The original book by Martha Ballard is a treasure chest of what life was like in the chaotic young nation and the ‘northern frontier’ of Maine in the late 1700’s, as seen through a woman’s eyes. The film is the result of eight years of painstaking study of Ballard’s diary and research by historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich.
The donation for admission is $3.00 per person, or two for $5.00. Advance reservations get a free popcorn or bottle of water. The next film, “The Jewish Mother in Cinema,” will be on February 15th.
