MPD Notice: Police discuss residential lockdown

Notice from the Milton Police Deparment

This afternoon, our 911 center received a call for a distraught man inside a home in Milton. The first officers on scene learned from a family member that this resident had recently been battling issues with mental health. Today, he became distraught causing fear for his family member. The officers vacated her from the home.

The subject then confronted the officers claiming he was armed with a handgun, and threatening to shoot. The officers forced him to retreat into a side room and they then locked down the house ordering him to come out. Investigation of the matter revealed that it may be possible that he gained access to a handgun. Nearly every Milton officer, including both K9 units and Detectives, locked down the street. For over an hour they made numerous attempts to convince this barricaded subject to surrender. His actions were totally negative. Attempts by phone, bull horn and the deployment of several distraction devices were futile.

At just after 3:30pm our regional partners, the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council, SWAT team was requested. Much of the neighborhood was now locked down. For over two hours, nearly twenty officers using cameras, and a State Police robot, focused on this home, locating the man secreted in the basement. After short dialogue with the SWAT officers, he surrendered. This is a difficult situation for any family and one which does not happen often in Milton. The officers involved in this incident today exercised a great deal of caution and patience ensuring no one was hurt.
For the residents of the Nancy/Gerald/Cypress/Lyman Rd. neighborhoods tonight, we thank you for your patience today, we apologize for any inconvenience and our officers are glad peace and calm has returned. Thank you all…
