At the 6/6 session of the School Committee two motions were made and passed to address 1st grade assignment issues.
Superintendent Gormley proposed the possibility of adding an English 1st grade class (strand) to Cunningham School. The administration seeks to have 2 stands of English at each elementary school. However enrollment across French and English have required logistical arrangements that have some students traveling to a school other than their neighborhood school and in the case of Cunningham, having only on English class. Gormley recommends sending a letter to Cunningham parents to gauge their interest in having students attend Cunningham if another English class is added. The school committee unanimously voted to send out the letter.
In a decision related to 1st grade enrollment challenges, the school committee also voted to close off registration in French to those who have not yet begun the registration process as the French classes at all the elementary schools are at or close to being fully subscribed (ie a class size of 26). The motion passed unanimously.
In other business, Chairman Glenn Pavlicek informed the group that 12 residents had expressed interest in the seat made vacant by Denis Keohane’s election to Board of Selectmen. After a lengthy discussion it was decided that the committee would hear from all 12 candidates. The session will take place on 6/13 at 7:00PM. The School Committee will meet on 6/19 with the Board of Selectmen in a joint vote to fill the seat.
