Milton Rotary Club Seeks Host Families for Exchange Students

News release from Mike Maholchic, The Milton Rotary Club

According to the most recent report of the Council on Standards for International Travel, in 2011 27,688 foreign high school students came to the United States, and 1,376 American students went abroad for year long study programs. Rotary International has sponsored a unique one-to-one exchange program since 1927 which sends approximately 40% of the American students overseas. For the twelfth year the Milton Rotary Club has joined in to sponsor two Milton students for an academic year abroad which will send Catherine Ashur to France, and Emma Pred-Sosa to Japan. There they will attend school and live with host families selected by volunteer Rotarians. In return, we will be hosting two students, a 16 year old girl from French-speaking Belgium and a 16 year old boy from Brazil.

We are looking for four loving and caring host families who are interested in learning more about the world, eager to share the American way of life, and wish to expose their own children to a different culture. This experience has led many to create life-changing friendships with enthusiastic visitors from overseas.

Having a teenager of your own is not essential. The foreign student would be a regular member of your family, not a guest. However, unlike your family members, you can deduct up to $50 a month while the student lives with you for the cost of food, transportation, and other amounts you actually spend for the well-being of the student. The Rotary Club will arrange for your orientation, for the student to attend Milton High School and will provide the student with an allowance of $100 a month. One of our members will be a youth counselor to assist you, and the club will provide the student with activities on a regular basis.

World peace can be achieved by greater understanding between individuals from different parts of the world, one person at a time. If you want to do something about world peace, the Rotary Club of Milton has an opportunity for you!
