There is always something going on around town. . . movie screenings at the library, the mayor of Milton soiree at the First Parish Church and. . . the smelts making their run up the Neponset! Thousands of these little sons of guns could be found this past week end doing what smelts do.A naturalist from NEPRWA notes, “smelts are running on the Neponset at Lower Mills and at Gulliver’s Creek in Milton (where they are much easier to see). Though the smelt come upstream to spawn at night and retreat to deeper water during the day, there were still quite a few hanging around. Also many tiny white eggs were also in evidence. Also in the area a quite a few dead and half eaten smelt who seem to be the victims of predators such as raccoons and birds. A number of the ones we saw swimming had bite marks on their backs.”
Anyone who is in the mood for a look can go by anytime. The creek is near the intersection of East Squantum Street and Hurlcroft Road in Milton. You can find more photos from one of the NEPRWA staff here.
