Temple Shalom to host new film series

Temple Shalom of Milton will open this season’s Winter Movie Series with two films that highlight the Sephardic Jewish experience on Saturday evening, November 20 at 7:00 p.m., and the public is invited to attend.

The first film is Fiestaremos!, which presents the inspiring work of musician Judy Frankel. The film, directed by Kathleen Regan, explores Frankel’s dedication to preserving Sephardic music and songs. It offers an intimate look at one of the leading collectors and practitioners of Sephardic folk music, including interviews with Frankel, musical excerpts and performances. Frankel studied music at the Longy School, Berklee, and Harvard, graduating from Boston University. Sadly, she died in 2008 shortly after the completion of this film.

The second film is Island of Roses: The Jews of Rhodes in Los Angeles. This charming documentary visits the Los Angeles community of Rhodeslis, Jews who lived on the Mediterranean island of Rhodes from 1492 to World War II. It shows how immigrants from Rhodes passed down their traditions, foods, songs, rituals, and their medieval Ladino Spanish dialect to their American-born children and grandchildren. Informative and entertaining, this film is an excellent opportunity to experience a little-known area of Jewish culture and history.

The donation for admission is $3.00 per person, two for $5.00. Advance reservations get a free popcorn or bottle of water. Become a Movie Series Sponsor for $18 and get tickets for all three movies, Nov. 20, Dec. 18, and Jan. 22, with preferred seating, popcorn and drinks.
