Meeting Notes: School Committee 02.09.10 – Good news / Bad news

At last night’s meeting of the Milton School Committee members received good news and bad news.

Leslie Collins, parent and chair of the Milton Foundation for Education (MFE) Grants Committee was joined by Asst. Principal Dr. Karen Spaulding, Pierce Gr.8 Science teacher Jennifer Gilbert, and Pierce Gr. 8 Science teacher Kathleen Bertrand. They discussed the awards, highlighting one Dr. Spaulding received for her project Hairy’s Inheritance. The funds will be used to: “Purchase lighting and watering systems and planting supplies. The students will study genetics, plant biology, and natural selection using Wisconsin Fast Plants which have a 40 day life cycle.”

Tazjah wants what Olive got . . .a home

We are thrilled to be able to report that Olive, a pit bull we profiled a couple of weeks ago was adopted from the Milton Animal League. Yay Olive! Congrats to you and your new owners!

One or her colleagues, Tazjah, a fun, active dog, is also in rather urgent need. The Milton Animal League is eager to find Tazjah a home.

Olivia Beaulieu adds shuttle title to trophy case

Dark skies forming over budget in advance of Town Meeting

UPDATE: 02.10.10 – 6:39pm – We heard today that the reduction being sought may have been changed from $700,000 to only $240,000. We are seeking confirmation on that.

The Warrant for the Special Town Meeting to take place on February 22nd arrived in the mail last Friday and the budget recommended by the Warrant Committee is $700,000 below the FY10 budget voted by Town Meeting in May 2009. The Warrant Committee seeks a $700k reduction for two reasons:

Four hurt when car overturns in Milton

Four people were injured when the car they were in flipped onto its roof on the Blue Hills Parkway in Milton.

All invited to Democratic Caucus on 2/11

The Milton Democratic Town Committee invites all registered democrats to the Caucus on Thursday, February 11th, Pierce Middle School Auditorium at 7 pm. The purpose of the caucus is to elect 20 delegates from Milton to represent the town at the convention on June 5th, Worcester Mass.

Lincoln Day 2010!

Every year around this time The Forbes House Museum celebrates Abraham Lincoln. Mary Bowditch Forbes, the last Forbes to live in the house at 215 Adams Street, was an avid collector of Lincoln memorabilia. Independent consultant endorses recommendation to establish independent facilities department

In January of 2009, the Consolidated Facilities Exploratory Committee (CFEC) released its findings.

The committee had been appointed in January of 2008 by the Board of Selectmen to assess the possibility of “creating a new Town of Milton facilities department by combining pre-existing and anticipated maintenance services that presently take place through separate departments within the town and the school department.”
