Forbes House Museum Gala Yields Huge Success

by Annie Davis

Calling the Forbes House Museum “a jewel in our community,” Peter Markell, CFO of Partners Healthcare and board member of the Museum, welcomed 150 guests under a tent on the landscaped grounds on Adams Street last Thursday, May 28th. Every seat was occupied at the annual fundraiser for this cultural and educational institution now in its 45th year.

This year’s event honored the contributions of E. Bradley Richardson, who has served on the board for over twenty years as a loyal member and chair. Richardson’s many activities in this community were enumerated in a Proclamation from the Massachusetts Senate delivered by Senator Brian A. Joyce.

Lifelong friend and fellow board member June Robinson, a classmate from their days at Milton Academy, toasted Mr. Richardson’s many accomplishments with heartfelt appreciation and humor. The museum’s executive director Christine M. Sullivan noted Mr. Richardson’s many, diverse activities related to the museum— assisting with spring cleaning and yard waste disposal, cooking burgers and dogs for Fall Family Day, leading the many Lincoln activities, and being a strong supporter and fund raiser. In acknowledgment, Ms. Sullivan presented him with an original watercolor of the museum by artist/author Phyllis Forbes Kerr.

What a glorious day – Congratulations MHS Class of 2009!!

“Turn on the music and roll down the windows!”

– Kassi Stein, Milton High School Class of 2009 Valedictorian

On a beautiful spring day the Milton High School class of 2009 graduated. Here are some highlights from the ceremony.

John Drottar, principal of Milton High School, served as master of ceremonies and in his brief opening remarks acknowledged the tragic loss the 2009 class experienced this year. He called for a moment of silence for Princess Revelus, whom, he said, “we will always remember.”

MHS Graduation 2009

The Salutatorian, Max Lieberman, began his address on a humorous note. The class had new found liberty and no longer had to endure such injustices as confronting a piece of pizza in the cafeteria that may have wanted him more than he wanted it. But he ended on a note that not only the class of 2009 could appreciate but the entire town when he said, “When I look across this sea of red and white” and wondered aloud, “what ground could be richer than this?”

Kassi Stein, the class Valedictorian, used traveling roads as a metaphor. You are going to hit bumps and potholes. hit a bump and your engine light may come on. Drive over a misplaced manhole cover and it may go off. Who know what life might bring? But in a message that was light-hearted, positive, and sincere, Stein encouraged the class to take on the bumps. “Life will have its bumps,” she said. Her solution:  “Turn on the music and roll down the windows. . . Don’t sweat it.”

Update from the School Superintendent

Mary Gormley, Superintendent of the Milton Public Schools has published her monthly update. It is available of the Milton Public School web site. View the complete update here. She addresses upcoming graduation, sports, swine flu etc. It is thorough and informative.

We’d like to call out two items because they illustrate how broad and deep the talents of our students are. Ms. Gormley writes:

“Speaking of graduating seniors, we would like to commend Evelyn Orlando, a student in Mme. Laine’s
French Humanities class. Along with her classmates, Evelyn recently entered an essay contest sponsored by the French Consulate in Boston. She was just notified that she has won the contest, earning a two-week, all expense paid trip to Paris. Evelyn’s essay was chosen from more than 250 received from the region. She will join 130 young people and 20 teachers on her Parisian trip, which will allow for the discovery of French culture and civilization through the eyes of the young. We are very proud of Evelyn and wish her ‘bon voyage.'”

and then there was this:

“Our very own Wally Heller, a Cunningham first-grader, recently won a statewide contest, sponsored by Massachusetts State Treasurer Tim Cahill and the Massachusetts School Building Authority. Wally submitted a drawing of Cunningham Elementary School and an essay, explaining why he thinks his school is “The Ideal School.” Nearly 2,500 students entered the contest and Wally was one of only 14 winners. He will attend a ceremony at the State House next week. Great job!”

These were just two highlights, please read Ms. Gormley’s full update here .

MWRA work may temporarily discolor water

MWRA WORK MAY CAUSE DISCOLORED WATER IN MILTON

The MWRA has been conducting an extensive rehabilitation program of its water pump stations to increase redundancy and reliability of the water system. On Wednesday, May 27th , the MWRA will begin testing of the newly rehabbed Hyde Park Pump Station. Testing will continue through Friday. This will create the potential for highly discolored water in the Fairmount Hill area of Hyde Park and Milton, especially the west side. Residents will not experience a reduction in water pressure.
