The Milton Public Library’s 2009 Summer “Starship Adventrure” Reading Club is now open for registration.
The last date to sign up is July 24th. It is open to children between the ages of 3 to 12 (those entering 7th Grade).

I-93 South approaching and through Downtown and South Bay
Nighttime Multi-lane Closure
Two-to-three lanes of I-93 South will be closed at night approaching and through Downtown (and South Bay on Sunday), Sunday, June 14, 2009 through Friday, June 19, 2009 from 11:30 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning.
These lane closures are for maintenance work.
I-93 South near the Charles River
Early Morning Highway Closure
I-93 South in the vicinity of the Charles River will be closed and detoured at early morning (Sunday night) Monday, June 15, 2009 from 12:30 AM to 5 AM. In addition, the on-ramps to I-93 South from Tobin Bridge will be closed at the same times.
Drivers will be detoured at Exit 26, Storrow Drive, and should follow signs through Leverett Circle to the 93 South on-ramp.
These closures are to allow line striping.
Storrow Drive On-Ramp to I-93 South
Early Morning/Nighttime Ramp Closure
The Storrow Drive on-ramp to I-93 South will be closed early morning (Monday night) Tuesday, June 16, 2009 from 1:00 AM to 5 AM and at night on Thursday, June 18, 2009 and Friday, June 19, 2009 from 11:30 PM to 5 AM the following morning.
Motorists destined for I-93 South should follow posted detour signs via Martha Road and Merrimac Street to the I-93 South on-ramp at New Chardon Street.
This closure is to allow for maintenance work.

Saying the death of a 4-year-old Stoughton girl who was struck by an elderly driver was “probably preventable,” state Sen. Brian Joyce has renewed his call for the legislature to quickly move to require road tests of all drivers 85 and older.
In fact, he says, drivers should probably be road tested after age 70, but that would be a difficult political battle to win. (Read the full story here.)

A pickup truck and several cars were involved in an accident on Interstate 93 South at East Milton Square.
Two separate crashes within five minutes of each other tied up traffic along Interstate 93 in Milton and Quincy, sending four people to the hospital for minor injuries this afternoon, State Police said. (Read the full story here.)

A housing development is being touted as an alternative to a controversial proposed strip mall at the Temple Shalom site on Blue Hill Avenue in Milton.
About 25 people attended a planning board walk-through of the four-acre site Thursday night. Afterward, members of a citizens’ advisory committee discussed alternatives that include housing. (Read the full story here.)
The Boston Globe reports today on the “baffling” trend in overrides in towns in the Boston area that are winning voter approval during a financially challenging time. Milton is among the communities discussed. Jeffrey Cruikshank one of the co-chairs of “Invest in Milton” gives his perspective.

The Boston Red Sox selected Milton native, Alex Hassan, on the second day of the 2009 player draft.

The Red Sox also selected three players with ties to New England. In the 20th round, the club picked Duke University right-handed pitcher Alex Hassan, a native of Milton, MA and former four-year letter winner at Boston College High School. Hassan was named to the All-Ping!Baseball Team in 2009 as a utility player, earning eight saves as the Blue Devils closer and batting .342 (75-for-219) as an outfielder. The junior finished with a 2-2 record and 4.10 ERA (12 ER/26.1 IP) on the mound while recording 17 doubles, four triples, three home runs, 30 RBI and a team-high 56 runs at the plate.
Every spring the Pierce music ensembles pile onto buses and head the the Great East Festival.
The Great East Festival affords the enembles to perform in a “non-threatening adjudicated setting.” (You can visit the Great Festvials web site here.)
The festivals take place near amusement parks. After giving a performance to the judges the kids get to take off and have some fun.
It is a great opportunity for the students to get an objective assessment of their ability as an ensemble. Both band and strings were awarded gold medals. Congratulations!

The state Department of Conservation and Recreation will be closing a section of Chickatawbut Road in Milton and Quincy to all vehicles on Sundays this summer.
“Sundays in the Park” will close the road between Route 28 in Milton and Willard Street in Quincy from 8 p.m. Saturdays until 7 a.m. Mondays from June 21 through Aug. 30. (Read the full story here.)
