Has the Community Preservation Act been a success?

The Boston Globe has piece giving the point of views of two Scituate officials regarding the Community Preservation Act. Milton voters voted not to adopt the Community Preservation Act recently. The Globe provides two sides. One from Karen Connolly, chairwoman of the Scituate Community Preservation Committee who supports it and Stephen Coulter, member of the Scituate Housing Authority board and the board’s representative to the town’s Community Preservation Committee who is not. Community Preservation Act passes in Canton

The third time was the charm in Canton, where voters backed the adoption of the Community Preservation Act after rejecting the program in 2006 and again last spring.

While Canton was among seven communities statewide to adopt the Community Preservation Act and an accompanying tax surcharge Tuesday, neighboring Milton was one of two to pass it up at the polls. (Read the full story here.)

Historic Open House & Garden Tour to benefit Citizens for Community Preservation

The public is invited inside the 1794 Isaac Davenport Manor House at the Polly Wakefeld estate, 1465 Brush Hill Road in Milton.

On this Sunday, October 14 from 1 to 4 PM the first floor of the house, which he called his “Country Seat”, and the estate gardens will be open. The late Polly Wakefield, a Davenport descendant, left the 1707 farm house, this mansion, and a 22 acre estate and the contents, for educational purposes.

At last week’s Planning Board session, the members discussed the Community Preservation Act. Selectman Tom Hurley is a principal proponent of having the town adopt the act. An article regarding teh CPA will be on the warrant for annual Town Meeting. Mr. Hurley appeared before the  Board to advocate for adoption and outline the benefits as he see them. He received a very favorable response. The board voted unanimously to recommend a Yes vote on the article.

Tom Hurley was a proponent of two issues that came up during last night’s selectmen’s meeting. The first was one of two resident appointments to the committee being formed to review town government. Hurley who submitted a motion that was passed several weeks ago said he wanted one resident with managerial experience and one with municipal experience. Two residents had contacted the Selectmen, Robert Gatnik and Jim Henderson. Gatnik got the nod.
