OK, who likes ice cream?
Well, have you heard of Mississippi Mud, Cape Cod Sand, or New York Super Fudge Chunk? They now have company. Dorchester Dirt, a new flavor created by The Ice Creamsmith in Lower Mills, joins a long list of stellar flavors. This one is named in honor of Dorchester Day.
Owners David and Robyn Mabel have fashioned one of their three special flavors for the month of June to symbolize some of the unique features of their store’s hometown. Dorchester Dirt uses chocolate as its base in memory of the Baker Chocolate Factory, a cookie crunch to symbolize the sands of Dorchester’s beaches as well as the grit of its residents, mini-marshmallows to represent our puddingstone hills and ledges, and a cinnamon flavor note to recall the early traders on Dorchester’s shores and to add some spice to the mix, like the spice added by the diversity of its citizens.
The Ice Creamsmith, which makes all its own ice cream, will carry Dorchester Dirt, along with Cappuccino Crunch and Peach, as its three special flavors for the month of June. Dot Dirt’s popularity will determine if it will become a Dorchester Day tradition, putting Dorchester on the map of places with an ice cream flavor named after them.
The Ice Creamsmith is located near the start of the Dorchester Day Parade in Lower Mills, at 2295 Dorchester Avenue, and is open from noon to 10 p.m. daily.
