Milton Rotary to honor Youth Award winners & kickoff 2015 International Project fundraiser

Milton Rotary Club is inviting the public to attend a special club meeting on Wednesday May 27 celebrating students who have been awarded Rotary scholarships, exchanges, and leadership training.

The meeting will be held at Abby Park Restaurant 556 Adams Street, Milton, at 12:15 PM.

The club will honor Oceane Marescal, graduating senior from Milton High School and the winner of a $3,000 college scholarship, Michael Sullivan, Shareen Alsebai, and Shane Savage who were sponsored to attend a Rotary youth leadership training weekend on Cape Cod, Isabelle Rausch, who will be an exchange student next year in Chile, and Ayse Mutlusen, an inbound Turkish exchange student .

Also featured that afternoon will be Susanna Place, long-time volunteer and board member for Safe Passage, a U.S. nonprofit that runs an innovative educational program for children and parents who live in the impoverished community next to the Guatemala City garbage dump.  She will highlight the efforts of Rotarian Dr. Deborah Walters, who kayaked over 2,500 miles from her home in Maine to Guatemala to raise funds for additional classrooms and teachers for Safe Passage (www.safepassage.org).

The Rotary International theme for 2015-16 is “Be a Gift to the World”.  In support of that, the Milton Rotary Club and its youth partners will be raffling off a 10′ recreational kayak to fundraise for our scholarship and student exchange programs and to help support Dr. Walter’s efforts.

“We are enormously grateful to Charles River Canoe & Kayak (www.paddleboston.com) for providing this sleek kayak to us at 50% of the cost.   Please thank them and make your next outing a paddle down the Charles River,” wrote Rotary member Michael Maholchic in an e-mail to the Times.

Kayak raffle tickets will go on sale on May 27 for $5 each. They will be for sale from Rotary Club members, Milton High students, and online at www.miltonrotary.org. Tickets can also be purchased by sending a check to Milton Rotary Club, PO Box 243, Milton, MA 02186 along with a self-addressed and stamped envelope for mailing of the purchased raffle tickets. The final drawing will be held August 5, 2015 at the club’s regular meeting at Abby Park Restaurant.
