MPD Notice: Town State of Emergency

Notice from the Milton Police Department

ATTENTION ALL RESIDENTS OF MILTON
Due to the unprecedented 70 plus inch snow cover in Milton, The Board Of Selectmen has issued a local “Declaration of Emergency,” effective today (Thursday) at 4:00 pm.

Main Issue:
The Town has declared this local State of Emergency due to the past few snow storms combined with another expected blizzard (12-16”) this weekend.

What to Expect:
As a result of this declaration, the National Guard will be sending equipment and staff to Milton to assist in snow removal.

The timeline of their arrival is unknown at this date, but they will advise Milton DPW with an approximate three (3) hour notification window.

Mutual Aid equipment will include small bobcats to clear fire hydrants throughout town and large front end loaders & dump trucks to remove and hall snow away from designated areas throughout Town.

Goals:
Primary – To widen streets & intersections for emergency public safety apparatus.

Secondary – To widen streets for residents to pass, clear business districts, clear school lots, etc… (Due to the impending school vacation, schools are a secondary objective)
** Please note the primary goal ** There are many communities in need. Once the National Guard arrives with equipment in Milton, it be a very direct and precise “concept of operations.” They are coming in to assist in an emergency and will work to accomplish that goal in cooperation with and in direction of the DPW (The goal being – widening roads & intersections without stopping or amending the plan based on individual complaints).

Snow Fields:

With the goal of getting snow out of intersections and streets, there limited places to house snow deposits. Snow could be dumped at various approved locations including:
– Turners Pond
– Shields Playground
– Andrews Field
– Kelly Field
– Harland St (Between the Damn and the first house up will be closed and turned into a snow field. Any access to Harland St homes will need to be done via Hillside St; thus making Harland A temporary “Dead end.”

This is not a situation where the town, is looking for input on problem areas or areas of complaints. The DPW developed a prioritized agenda based on what the NG can do operationally for Milton. Please understand that we cannot remove all of the snow. Manpower concentration will focus on those areas. We cannot specify the exact areas at this time because they depend on equipment and personnel availability at time of deployment.
This emergency removal work will occur at all hours and noise complaints will not alter the plans.

Parking Ban:

Obviously a parking ban will remain in effect. Chief Wells has noted previously, all night permits are “suspended” in this state of emergency.

Resident Notifications:
In addition to public posts, all local media outlets have been apprised of this Emergency Declaration. the Town website has also posted this order. Once we (MPD) have an identified time/date/locations of National Guard implementation/operations, we will update you here regularly.

This order was put in place improve public safety for our community as a result of this dangerous snow cover. Please be patient and cooperate with personnel should they be deployed in your area. MPD will have officers assigned to every crew. We have a limited window of opportunity once this operation begins and want to maximize these resources.

Thank you all for your assistance and cooperation.
