Letter: Fireworks are getting tiresome

Letter from Bonnie Abbott

These nightly displays of fireworks are getting very tiresome. I live in the Tucker neighborhood and am just fed up with my children being kept up and my dog being frightened by all the noise. This isn’t some town having a celebration. These fireworks are being set off by individuals who buy fireworks out of state and set them off illegally. This area does not have the wide open spaces of a beach, empty field or parking lot. This is an area full of trees, houses and people.

Friends and I have been told that the fireworks are coming from Boston. I have seen first hand some fireworks being set off at Tucker.

Maybe our chief of police should reach out to the precinct Chief in Mattapan to do something about this nightly disturbance.
After all it is illegal in Massachusetts for individuals to set off fireworks.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

Bonnie Abbott

I too live in the Tucker neighborhood. I was told by Milton Police they are coming from Mattapan. We called the Mattapan precinct Saturday night and were told they had more important things to take care of!

Amen Bonnie. They wake up my 5 year old twins all the time and drive me personally nuts. I was actually going to get in the car lat night and drive and try to find the culprits but then made a safer decision and stayed home despite the annoyance.

From the EPA: Noise pollution adversely affects the lives of millions of people. Studies have shown that there are direct links between noise and health. Problems related to noise include stress related illnesses, high blood pressure, speech interference, hearing loss, sleep disruption, and lost productivity. Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is the most common and often discussed health effect, but research has shown that exposure to constant or high levels of noise can cause countless adverse health affects. http://www.epa.gov/air/noise.html

From the articles to the MA constitution: The people shall have the right to clean air and water, freedom from excessive and unnecessary noise, and the natural, scenic, historic, and esthetic qualities of their environment; https://malegislature.gov/Laws/Constitution

Constant plane noise and pollution, fireworks, loud speakers and crowds on Curry fields, motorcycles at night, slamming car doors, commercial activities in residential areas – who is protecting our health, rights, and quality of life?

I too have considered driving around to find the source but thought the better of it, it could be dangerous. I have been told by the MPD that they are coming from the Mattapan area of Boston. Maybe if the MPD as well as residents of Milton call the Mattapan Precinct (617) 343-4700 or file complaints online (http://bpdnews.com/commend-an-officer-1/) we can get some relief. The summer is barely beginning.

    WOW!!!
Seems to me it’s the time of year to celebrate, collectively and individually, nearly 240 years of the independence of our great country.

    U.S.A.! U.S.A.! U.S.A.!!!

Seriously, It’s been every night going on two months now. I am suspecting it is more than just kids. Kids run out of Fireworks/$. I am thinking someone who is a local supplier/smuggler ginning up business with demos.

It needs to stop before a)Someone gets hurt. Fireworks are not kid friendly. B) Before the neighborhood starts looking to solve the problem on its own. or C) Before the water level drops and the unsuspecting consequence of negligence is a home being burnt to the ground.

Agreed! This is a serious issue of Disturbing the Peace, Use of Illegal Fireworks AND a true Fire/Safety hazard. I hope that the Milton and Boston Police takes this very seriously.

The Board of Selectmen are meeting tomorrow (Weds, 6/18) at the Council on Aging at 6:30 and will be receiving an update on the fireworks noise issue.

Thank you Bonnie for getting the word out! Somehow I think word got around. I slept like the baby for the first time in months, enough time to get my system back in balance to truly appreciate the Milton fest fireworks this weekend and the July 4th, spectacular two planned events that we prepare ahead of time for.

Kudos to Bonnie Abbott for raising this issue and 02186 for providing the space to discuss it. We have also been bothered and concerned about the nightly fireworks and enjoyed the quiet last night. Not sure if there’s a connection, but I hope this will continue!

This problem is irritating. Realistically, the Selectmen have no power to fix this. Neither do our police. You could equate it to the airplane noise.

Boston Police DO have more important issues. They do not care that Milton residents may be irritated by the noise.

As I posted earlier, I suggested residents fill out a complaint at the Boston Police Website. http://bpdnews.com/commend-an-officer-1/

I filed an online complaint on Monday afternoon and received a call three hours later from a Sargent connected to the Mattapan Prescient. He explained to me that his department is aware of the fireworks and is asking the public to help determine the exact area of the disruptions. Since I live near the Eliot Street/Columbine area I sounds to me as if they are coming from across the Neponset near River Street. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I was also told they have added an additional patrol car to the Mattapan Square area to help calm the motorcycles and scooters that speed down Blue Hill Ave and also listen for fireworks.

Someone should get Joe Shortsleeve and the WBZ I- Team on this illegal fireworks problem. They are very good at getting to the source of a problem.
