2013 Milton High School 5th Annual Sports & Clubs Walkathon

The 2013 Milton High School 5th Annual Walkathon is being held on Saturday, February 9, 2013 from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm in the Copeland Field House. The theme of the Walkathon is 2013 MHS Walkathon: ALL IN FOR SPORTS AND CLUBS! Funds raised will be utilized for MHS sports and clubs in the spring and fall of 2013.

The Walkathon is an annual event intended to provide financial support to fill the gap between money provided for the sports and clubs programs in the Milton school budget and operational expenses. The school budget addresses about 1/3 of the operating costs of the sports and club programs; another 1/3 is generated in user fees and gate receipts and the remaining 1/3 must be raised through volunteer fundraising.

MHS adult fundraising efforts thus far have included the MHS Boosters Swing for Sports and the MHS banner program. Everyone is pitching in to keep sports and clubs funded at MHS.

The MHS Walkathon is the only fundraising effort led by the student body. The $30,000 goal sought in pledges from this year’s Walkathon is necessary to maintain the 29 sports and 32 clubs currently offered at Milton High School. The money from this event is split evenly between the sports and clubs programs. In the first four Walkathons, over $84,000 was raised by student walkers. This year, the Walkathon effort is being led by a group of motivated MHS students who participate in sports and clubs and want to keep them. MHS coaches and club advisors are being asked to encourage all athletes and club members to participate in the 2013 Walkathon. Increased participation by all four MHS classes totaling almost 950 students, is crucial to the success of this event. Additionally, the MHS Walkathon Student Planning Group has reached out to the 8th graders at Milton’s Pierce Elementary School to seek participation and support since they will be the incoming MHS Freshman Class in September 2013.

Additionally, over 100 local businesses have been contacted seeking sponsorship of the 2013 Walkathon. The Milton Community should expect an enormous push for pledges by the students from Milton students in grades 8-12. We thank the community once again for its anticipated generosity and support of the sports and clubs programs at Milton High School. Checks may be issued to Milton High School, 25 Gile Road, Milton, MA 02186. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Gormley, Milton Public Schools Superintendent at 617-696-4470.
