Fontbonne student wins prestigous art award

Fontbonne Academy junior, Julia Himmel of Quincy, was recently honored in New York City’s Carnegie Hall with a silver medal at the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards National Celebration for her photography.

The 89th Annual Scholastic Art & Writing Awards drew 800 students from around the country to the celebration May 31- June 2. Students were congratulated by Scholastic’s Chairman, President, and CEO, Dick Robinson, and the Executive Director of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, Virginia McEnerney. Three-time Academy Award-winning actress Meryl Streep, the keynote speaker, congratulated the students on their accomplishments. “We are counting on you to explain this very complicated world and our future,” Ms. Streep said in her address. “You’re not only expressing yourselves, what you think and feel. In time you’ll understand this: you speak for all of us,” she said.

Julia was supported and guided by her Art Teacher at Fontbonne Academy, Milton resident, Ms. Nicole Robertson, who was also sent a certificate and medal honoring the role she played in Julia’s success. In a letter from Scholastic, she was thanked for her commitment and dedication to the arts, and for her outstanding efforts in supporting Julia.
