Selectmen make it official: Mearn out as Town Administrator

Before the start of last night’s meeting of the Board of Selectmen; the atmosphere at the Council on Aging was almost funereal: dark suits, somber faces, and hushed conversations. The majority of the crowd of about fifty people were there in support of Kevin Mearn, the Town Administrator whose contract the Selectmen had recently voted not to renew in an executive session. The vote was going to be retaken in open session due to open meeting law violation. The outcome was the same. The Selectmen voted 2-1 not to renew with Tom Hurley voting for and Bob Sweeney and Denis Keohane voting against. Read more »

Hendries building to come down but when?

At last night’s Board of Selectmen’s meeting, Brian McDonough, attorney for Connelly Construction, addressed the issue of demolishing the Hendries building at 131 Eliot Street. Connelly had been sent an order from Inspectional Services to take the building down due to safety concerns. After further review and discussion Connelly filed a demolition permit with the town on Friday; but there is an issue of timing. Read more »

Milton Reads! 2012 – community wide reading to launch in September

Mary Riffe Hiss, a member of the Library Board of Trustees, announced Milton Reads! 2012 at a recent Board of Selectmen’s meeting. Milton Reads! is an initiative from the Milton Library, Friends and Foudation that engages the town in a community wide cultural activity – reading a book together. The book they have chosen is the timeless American classic, To Kill a Mockingbird. Read more »

Mtg Notes: Plan’g Brd 07.26.12 – Still no vote on Hendries

Despite urging by the public present at the meeting and the expectation of the developer’s attorney, the Planning Board resisted taking a vote on the granting of a bonus to Connelly Construction, developer of the Hendries site at 131 Eliot Street. The attorney, William McDermott, was hopeful the bonus would be granted; the residents in attendance recommended it be denied. Neither got their wish. Read more »

Thinkin’ Lincoln: Restoration taking place at Forbes House Museum in Milton

I-93 in Milton to be disrupted by road work

Weekend driving on I-93 will be bogged down by construction and multiple lane closures.

Milton tops Needham 5-3 in district playoff

Milton topped Needham Friday night 5-3 in District 6 American Legion playoff action at Cunningham Park. Willie Archibald was on the mound for Milton. Letter: Schools need to address critical enrollment issues

Ms. Renz appeared during Citizen Speak at the most recent School Committee meeting. Following is full text of her remarks to the committee.

Thank you Chairman Pavlicek, members of the School Committee (“SC”) Board, Superintendent Gormley and Assistant Superintendents Phelan and Gillis.

My name is Jennifer Renz and my husband, Justin, and I reside at 48 Walnut Street. We are the parents of three children, twins that will be entering second grade English at the Glover in August 2012 and an incoming first grade English student who is slated to enter the co-taught class as a role model student at the Glover. I say slated because my husband and I have yet to decide whether or not my youngest son should enter a classroom that we feel is not presently educationally sound. Read more »
